There is no shortage of think pieces, stat sheets, highlight reels and barbershop debates solidifying Michael Jordan’s rightful claim to the throne. Widely considered the “greatest of all time,” even before his retirement(s), his Royal Airness is often mentioned alongside the likes of Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali and Tony Hawk for propelling their respective sport into the globalizing conglomerates they are today. While Ruth jumpstarted one of the most recognizable brands in the world, Ali injected style and intellect to a most violent sport, and Hawk grinded skateboarding into popular culture, no one’s legacy continues to soar quite like Mike’s, thanks in part – or rather mostly – to his revolutionary line of sneakers with Nike and his eponymous Jordan Brand.
But why is it that MJ and his sneakers remain so popular more than a decade after his last professional game? And most importantly, at least for us sneakerheads, how much longer will his dominance atop the footwear industry prevail?
NikeLab keeps the releases coming, following up this season’s Flyknit Trainer Chukka SFBs with the brand new Lunar Huarache Light. A nod to Tinker Hatfield‘s original 1991 Air Huarache Light, the design — seen here in a clean all-white make-up and also due out in black — now sports a plush Lunarlon sole unit in place of it’s usual Air-cushioned sole, but retains its OG mesh and leather construction, as well as its signature translucent thermoplastic eyestay. Expect the new release to be available from Nike.com and NikeLab locations in limited quantities beginning March 12.

The well-known sneakerhead and Nike Air Force 1 connoisseur has teamed up with sneaker customizer The Shoe Surgeon on a crazy piece of custom footwear. Using a crisp white-on-white Air Force 1 High as the base (duh), Geiger’s creation is highlighted by 16 different misplaced Swooshes on each pair. Appropriately nicknamed “Misplaced Checks,” the custom uses all real leather, including styles like Horween, veg tan, shark, and pony hair. Dude went IN on this sneaker.
Geiger’s collection, which is all hand-made by The Shoe Surgeon, is limited to only 25 pairs and will retail for $500. The launch date is set for February 27 at 6 p.m. EST. Watch for John Geiger’s Twitter because he’ll be tweeting out a link when the sneakers are available for purchase.
